Alberta Family Histories Society is pleased to welcome Wayne Shepheard as the new Editor of the quarterly publication “Chinook”, replacing Xenia Stanford, who recently retired from the position of Editor after leading the award winning publication for five years.

About Wayne Shepheard

Wayne has been an amateur genealogist for a number of decades now having caught the “bug” from an aunt who had spent several decades chasing down his mother’s family across the United States. No one had looked much at his father’s side, though, so when he finally found the time, and the internet beckoned with loads of information, he got busy with his other line of ancestors. With the help of some birth and marriage certificates he had inherited from his parents and grandparents, he started his search in Devon, England. It was not long before he found that the Shepheard family originated in Cornwood parish, in the southwest part of Devon. His family tree grew to include hundreds of individuals who had lived and died in the area for over 300 years.

With a great deal of data in hand, including all of the parish church records, experience in transcribing those records and knowledge gained from his searches, he finally became an Online Parish Clerk (OPC) in 2003, for Cornwood and three adjacent parishes. OPC’s are volunteers who “adopt” a parish, collect all manner of data on the area and make such information available free to other family researchers.

Wayne is a retired geologist (oil & gas exploration) and now spends most of his time in genealogical pursuits. He has continued research on his family throughout the British Isles and assisted many other people with theirs as well.

As a native of Calgary, and a descendant of many immigrants to Southern Alberta, he decided to get more involved with the local genealogical society. An opportunity presented itself in the role of assisting the Editor of the Chinook in 2010, which he took on with great interest and enthusiasm. Events moved quickly and he has now assumed the reins of the journal as Editor.  Wayne is looking forward to being able to continue the great tradition of publishing a high-quality journal on behalf of the Alberta Family Histories Society.
