1997: Deaths - Bi
BIELECKI - Peter M. Bielecki, beloved
18 year old son of Mark and Jolanta Bielecki of Calgary, passed away in
a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, October 22, 1997. Peter was born
May 17, 1979 in Poland and came to Canada in 1982. He attended St. Joseph
Elementary School, Cardinal Newman Junior High School, Bishop Grandin High
School and was a student in Printing Management Technology at SAIT at the
time of his death. Peter was a member of the Midsun Community Basketball
Team and enjoyed all sports. One of Peter's favorite hobbies was sketching.
Besides his loving parents, Peter is survived by his twin brother Paul;
as well as his grandparents and extended family members. Funeral Mass will
be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church (1414 Shawnessy Boulevard

BIGGAR - Robert Andrew Hamilton Biggar passed away at home in Strathmore
on October 24, 1997 at the age of 76 years. Bob was born February 18,
1921 in Strathmore and has resided in the area most of his life. He is
survived by his loving wife Mildred; his daughter Jane (Brian) Taylor;
and son Terry (Donna); five grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons,
Ed and Allen, and one daughter Linda. Funeral Service Tuesday, October

BINNIE - Malcolm Charles Binnie of Calgary, passed away at the Agape

BIRKBECK - Mrs. Catherine Birkbeck (nee Knox) passed away at the Cedars
Villa Nursing Home on October 31, 1997 at the age of 96 years. Mrs. Birkbeck
was born on September 30, 1901 at Aberdeen, Scotland and moved to Calgary
in 1912 with her family. She married Lonsdale Birkbeck on February 6,
1925. She was a member of the Knox United Church, an associate member
of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 1 and a member of the Army and
Navy Airforce Veterans. She is survived by a daughter Lorraine Page; grandchildren,
Dan Swick, Rhonda Nolte, Michael Page and Joe Page; great-grandchildren,
Katie Swick, Lucas Nolte, Justin and Jason Page. She was predeceased by
her husband Lonsdale Birkbeck in 1977 and her grandson Lon Swick in 1975.

BIRTLES - Blanshard (Birt) Birtles passed away peacefully at the Rockyview
Hospital on Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at the age of 80 years, after a
brief struggle with cancer. He was predeceased by his loving wife Esme,
with whom he spent many happy years. He is survived by his son Robert
(Bob) Birtles; his daughter Sheila McLean; and his stepson Ken (Toby)
Knight; his grandchildren, Teresa Rogers, Sandra Dalm, Spencer Villam

BISH - Mrs. Pauline Bish of Calgary passed away at the Rockyview Hospital
on Monday, November 3, 1997. She is survived by two daughters and one
son-in-law, Jean Bish, and Susan and Kevin Mumby, all of Calgary; two
brothers and sisters-in-law, Loui and Fern Engel of Halkirk, Alberta,
Sonny and Gerry Engel of Sylvan Lake, Alberta; a sister and brother-in-law,
Lena and George Knight of Enderby, B.C. Pauline was predeceased by her
husband Howard in July of 1987, her mother Elizabeth in 1991, her father
Alexander in 1964, and sisters, Anna Houser in 1968 and Freda Nill in
1992. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, and two great-uncles,
Jacob (Jack) Engel and Adolph Engel. She was born in Klostitz, Romania
and immigrated with her parents to Alberta in 1929 and received her education
at Leo and Stettler, Alberta and Kelowna, B.C. She served in the B.C.
Reserve Army. In addition, Pauline served as president of the Black Diamond
Home and School Association. She also served as president of the Calgary
Insurance Women's Club, the Calgary Business and Professional Women's
Club, charter member of Desk and Derrick, Unicef Provincial Volunteer
Chairman and various other organizations. Active in her lodge for over
fifty years, Pauline was a member of Sandstone Rebekah Lodge No. 83 and
a District Deputy President and founding chairman of the Odd Fellow Rebekah
Visual Research Foundation of Alberta, receiving the Decoration of Chivalry
in 1990. She also served as a member of the Calgary Public Library Board
and was a life member of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Pauline worked
in the business world all her life, including her own company, "Weddings

BISHOP - Mrs. Beulah Grace Bishop of Calgary, passed away at the Glamorgan
Care Centre on September 3, 1997, at the age of 96 years. Born October
24, 1901 in Dawson, North Dakota, Beulah came to Canada in 1904 with her
parents, who homesteaded near Lockwood, Saskatchewan. She married W.F.
Bishop (Bish) in 1923 and lived in various Saskatchewan towns where "Bish"
taught school. They moved to Calgary in 1954 and then to the Mountview
Lodge in Olds in 1987. Bish predeceased her in 1988. In the last year
of her life, Beulah enjoyed a special friendship with Tessa, Justin, Sara
and Jackie. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary and
the Rebecca Lodge for many years. She will be lovingly remembered by her
two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Gerry Jacques, and Louise
and Norman Warthe; as well as by seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

BISHOP - Bruce Armitage, at his home in North Hatley, November 10, 1997,
leaving his wife Helene Beaulieu; his former wife Beatrice Glassco of
Abbotsford, B.C., mother of his three daughters, Gail Filgueira (Julio)
of Georgetown, Ontario, Judith Nesbitt (Ron) of Oakville, Ontario and
Ann McCracken (Ron) of Calgary, Alberta; five grandchildren, Tara and
Kerrie Nesbitt, Casey, Niki and Amy McCracken. The brother of Dean Bishop
(Sherbrooke, Quebec), and the late Craig Bishop (Halifax, N.S.). According
to his wishes, his body was donated to the CUSE for medical research and
transplants. He was as generous in death as he was in life. He will be
deeply missed. A Service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday,
November 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church in North Hatley (11/13/97).
BISHOP - Marie Bishop of Calgary, passed away after a lengthy illness,
on November 26, 1997 at the age of 52 years. Marie is survived by her
loving husband Michael and son Stephen. At the family's request, there
will be no Service, and the cremated remains will be returned to England

BLANCHARD - Mr. George Blanchard of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of
Mrs. Georgina Blanchard, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 1997 after
a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by one daughter Gwen of
Medicine Hat; sons, Eldon of Medicine Hat and Dennis of Calgary. Funeral

BLAND - Richard S., passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital
on September 4, 1997 at the age of 43 years. Richard was born in Hertfordshire,
England and moved to Calgary with his wife Leny in 1978. For the past
twenty years, he has pursued his career as an engineering consultant.
Most recently serving the oil and gas industry in Alberta as a partner
with Techskil Ltd. He was also involved as a volunteer in various community
activities including the Boy Scouts and soccer. Richard will be remembered
as a loving husband and devoted father who never lost his sense of humour.
Besides his wife Leny, son Stephen and daughter Isabel, Richard will be
sadly missed by his mother Joan Bland; brother John (Nuale); and grandmother
Muriel Hunt, all of England; as well as numerous relatives and close friends
in Europe and Canada. A Memorial Service will be held at Woodcliff United

BLASCO - David Lorence, beloved husband of Beverly Blasco of Calgary,
passed away on Monday, October 27, 1997 at the age of 52 years. David
was born on October 9, 1945 in Melnice, Manitoba. He had been employed
in the lumber industry for thirty-five years until his retirement in August
1955. Besides his loving wife Beverly, David is also survived by his eighteen
year old twin daughters, Robin and Amber. He is also survived by five
brothers, Alfred, Bill, Norman, Victor and Ronald; and three sisters,
Florence, Marge and Joyce; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased
by his mother Mary in 1996 and father Michael in 1987. Funeral Services

BLISS - Margaret Mary Bliss (nee Yule), beloved wife of Harvey Walter
Bliss, passed away on July 23, 1997 at the Rockyview General Hospital
after a lengthy illness. Born in Grande Prairie, Alberta on August 7,
1925, Margaret is survived by Harvey and their daughters and sons-in-law,
Gail and Stan Carscallen, Carol and Rob Chittick, Janet Bliss, and Susan
and Bob McKay; as well as nine grandchildren, Brock and Gavin Carscallen;
Laura, Ian, Neil and Michael Chittick; Gordon and Alison McKay; and Craig
McMullen. She is also survived by her only sister Georgina (Dodie) Sherbaniuk
of Edmonton, Alberta. A devoted wife and mother during her fifty-one years
of marriage, Margaret was also an involved and caring member of the community,
including being a longtime member and past president of the Samaritan

BLOCK - Mr. Harold S. Block beloved husband of Idene Block of Big Valley,
passed away suddenly at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, October 24,
at the age of 83 years. Harold was born October 21, 1914 at Mabton, Washington,
USA. His family moved to the farming district at Millicent, Alberta in
1920. Harold spent his lifetime doing that which he loved, farming and
ranching. His love of agriculture was fulfilled at farms and ranches first
at Millicent, then Dalroy, Youngstown and Standard. Harold and Idene retired
to Big Valley in 1990. Harold will be missed and remembered by his wife
Idene; and his sister Dorothy Lundstad; as well as his loving family,
daughter Andrea (Walton) Van Dyke; son Zane Block; daughter Kristine (Gary)
Smith; and son Jess (Patricia) Block; seven grandchildren, Dee Dee and

BLOOR - It is with great sadness that Judith A.H. Bloor, beloved mother,
daughter and friend passed away peacefully at her home in Calgary on September
9, 1997. She is remembered with love and affection and will be truly missed.
Her devotion and commitment to her children, Alex, Isabel, Sarah are a

BOBEY - Gregory (Greg) Bobey of Calgary, passed away at his home on October
20, 1997 at the age of 29 years. Greg is survived by his father Stephen

BODMER - Elsie (nee Park) Bodmer of Bassano passed away peacefully in
Bassano, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, October 4, 1997 at the
age 83 years. Cherishing her memory are eldest son Hugh and his wife Caroline
of Olds and their daughters, Jennifer and Robyn; her second eldest son
Rod and his wife Geri of Gibsons, B.C. and their children, Nicole, David,
Brittany and Caitlin; her daughter Shelley and her husband Doug Peters
of Didsbury and their children, Thomas and Andrea; Elsie's sister Muriel
Blair of Edmonton, Elsie's sister Barbara and her husband Trevor Bowen
of Trail, B.C.; brother-in-law Laverne and his wife Betty-Ann of Bassano
and their families. Schooled at St. Mary's Convent, a year at Normal,
and additional training at the Banff School of Fine Arts, The University
of Calgary and University of Saskatchewan, her career spanned four decades
and hundreds of students. Elsie began teaching in 1935 and had taught
in Schuler, Samis School (near Olds), Rosemary where she met and married
Grant Bodmer in 1944, Grassy Lake, Banff and finally Bassano, as well
as substitute teaching in surrounding areas. She retired form teaching
in 1974 to enjoy her art, music, reading, hockey, her home, her grandchildren
and some travelling with Grant before his passing in 1987. Elsie was a
Charter Member of the International Order of the Daughter of the Nile,
past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Mary Keohane Chapter,
Bassano and provincially had served as Grand Choir Conductress and Grand
Soloist. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life on
Friday, October 10, at 2:30 p.m. from St. Mary's Anglican Church, Bassano,

BOLDT - Doris Margaret was called home June 2, 1997. Doris was much loved
and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She will be remembered as the dearly beloved wife and confidante of forty-nine
years to David Boldt; devoted and giving mother and grandmother to son
David, his wife Bonnie, and daughter Auralea of Creston, B.C.; son Terry,
his wife Karin and daughters, Lynsey and Suzanne; son Laurie, his wife
Gail, and their sons, Michael and Andrew; and her daughter Jade, all of
Calgary. Dedicated daughter to Margaret Marsden of Lacombe; loving sister
and friend of Norma Zaytsoff, also of Lacombe and Alice Barker of Goodnow,
B.C. She goes to meet her father Albert Bossingham who died in 1959 and
stepfather Edgar "Pop" Marsden who died in 1980. Doris was a
good and caring companion to countless other family members and friends,
especially those at Northmount Baptist Church where she led quietly. Doris
was known as a gentle spirit who loved people, animals, birds and flowers.

BOLES - James Foster passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at
the age of 71 years on September 9, 1997. Foster was born to Foster and
Jeannette Boles in Three Hills on June 12, 1926. He enlisted in the Royal
Canadian Artillery to serve his country in 1944. Foster married Ellen
Kaatiala in 1951 and they have resided on the family farm until his passing.
Farming was the life he loved. He also enjoyed a good visit with everyone
and enjoyed traveling. Foster suffered from poor health for many years.
Throughout the years he had a very determined spirit and always looked
on the positive side of any new problem that he faced. He leaves to mourn
his passing, his wife Ellen; two daughters, Shirley Ann and Darrel Adam
of Three Hills; two brothers, Howard (Marjorie) Boles, George (Doreen)
Boles, all of Three Hills; two sisters, Margaret (Dick) Walkup of Tacoma,
Wash., and Beatrice (Stan) Mellor of Edmonton; and numerous nieces and
nephews, and friends. Funeral Services will be held at the Knox United

BORGER - Eric Borger, formerly of Bassano, passed away in Brooks on November
28, 1997 at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his loving daughters,
Haddie Konschuh and her husband Stan of Cluny, Dorothy Lutes and her husband
Ralph of Calgary and Louise Yakiwchuk and her husband Ed of Bassano; eight
grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and a brother Bill Borger and
his wife Frieda of Calgary. Eric was born on December 22, 1910 in Friedenfeld,
Russia. He was predeceased by his first wife Lydia in 1963, his wife Gerda
in 1979, daughter Valorie in 1996, grandchildren, Perry Konschuh in 1958
and Christy Konschuh in 1973, a sister Hedwig and a brother Albert. At

BOSCH - Alan John Bosch died peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 1997 at
the Dr. Vernon Fanning Extended Care Centre. His family and friends rejoice
that he has gone home to his Lord and Saviour, to live in glory forever.
Alan was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on December 4, 1971 and moved with
his family to Calgary in 1975. At the time of his death Alan was a ten
year resident at the Fanning Centre. Alan will be missed and loved by
his loving parents, Henry and Jean Bosch, and his grandmother Catherina
Hulstein of Lethbridge. He was predeceased by his grandparents Wouter
Hulstein and Fred and Hanna Bosch, all of Lethbridge. Alan is also survived
by numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. A private family Inurnment will
be held followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July
2, 1997 at the Calgary Community Reformed Church, 1638 - 30 Avenue S.W.,
Calgary, with Reverend Art Vander Meulen officiating. In lieu of flowers

BOUCHARD - Victor Bouchard passed away in Drumheller, AB, on October
31, 1997 at the age of 89 years. Victor was born in Weyburn, SK, on July
2, 1908. He is survived by his children, his son Frank (Marie) and their
family, Chad, Charmaine (Brad), great-grandchildren, Blair and Taylor,
all of Calgary; his daughter Joan (Joe) Calpas of Drumheller, AB and their
family, Jim (Janet) of Brooks, AB, Dean of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA,
and Kevin of Drumheller; his son Dave (Geri) and their family, Michael
(Heather), Robert (Yvonne) of Victoria, B.C. and Nicole of Calgary; his
son Dale (Vi) and their family, Darren, Melissa (Rick) of Calgary. Victor
was predeceased by his loving wife Rosalie on September 3, 1997, a daughter
Sharon and a son Michael, his parents, five brothers and three sisters.
Prayers were held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church (151 - 3 Street West,
Drumheller, AB) on Monday, November 3, 1997 at 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass
was Celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 4,
1997 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Fred Sogz, Celebrant. Rite of Committal was
held in Hatley Memorial Gardens Cemetery (2050 Sooke Road, Victoria, B.C.)
on Thursday, November 6, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made in Victor's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society (Second

BOUDREAU - Lisa Michele, suddenly on November 8, 1997 at the Foothills
Hospital at the age of 35 years. Predeceased by her dad David, she leaves

BOUGHTON - Robert (Rob) William Boughton of Calgary, passed away at the
Foothills Hospital on Tuesday, December 23, 1997 as a result of an accident
at the age of 19 years. Rob is survived by his parents, Ruth and Brian;
a brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Angie Boughton, and their children,
Evie, Shayne and Amanda; his grandparents, Ernest and Margaret Pilkington
and Robert and Shirley Boughton, all of Calgary; as well as numerous aunts,

BOWSHER - Miriam Constance (Babs), born in Sussex, England on October
3, 1911, died at the Beverly Care Centre, October 1, 1997. She will be
lovingly remembered by her daughter Kathleen (Douglas) Tompkins; a son
Norman (Susan) Bowsher; grandchildren, Patty (Dale) Martin, Lindsey (Randy)
Read, Kelly Tompkins, Susan (Rick) Wagner, Patrick Bowsher; great-grandchildren,
