1997: Deaths - E
EADY - Ellen Doris (nee Rach) passed
away peacefully at home with her family at her side on June 10, 1997. Born
October 27, 1924 in Calgary, Alberta. Predeceased by her first child Janice
in 1946. Ellen is lovingly survived by her husband of fifty-five years,
Ted; her children, Brian (Sheena), Maureen (Jim), and Mike (Audrey); her
grandchildren, Steve (Lisa), Sheryl, Christine, Matt, Dan, Jennifer (Graham),
and Darrel (Judy); her great-grandchild Victoria; and her brother Edwin
(Ane). Ellen enjoyed life with great enthusiasm and adventure. Ellen's delight
and greatest loves were her family and her love for Jehovah God, where she
put her complete trust. All who knew Ellen witnessed her strong will and
conviction for living. With a positive attitude, despite her lengthy illness,
she touched the hearts of all she met. Ellen will be dearly remembered for
her faith and graciousness. Memorial Service to be held Saturday, June 14,

EAGLE - Mrs. Dorothy (Amy) Eagle of Calgary, passed away at the George
Boyack Nursing Home on December 21, 1997 at the age of 93 years. She was
born in Renville, Minnesota, U.S.A. and came to Canada in 1922 to Gull
Lake, Saskatchewan and later moved to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and also
resided in Moose Jaw and Swift Current, Saskatchewan until moving to Calgary
in 1950 and resided in Calgary since. Mrs. Eagle was employed as a housekeeper
at Leyden's Funeral Home Ltd. for thirty-three years until her retirement.
Mrs. Eagle is survived by two sons, Tommy Elmer Eagle, Calgary and Jack
Melvin (Maureen) Eagle, Ottawa, Ontario; and one daughter Violina (Hector)
Schneider, Medicine Hat, Alberta; as well as seven grandchildren, one
brother and one sister in the United States. She was predeceased by her
husband Sidney T. Eagle in 1990 and also by two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at LEYDEN'S "Chapel of Remembrance"
(17 Avenue and 2 Street S.W.) on Friday, December 26, 1997 at 3:00 p.m.
Cremation will follow at Leyden's Bow Valley Crematorium and Inurnment
will be in the family plot at Maple Creek Cemetery, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

EAMON - Harry Gordon Eamon, the beloved husband of Louise (nee Leckie),
formerly of Calgary, passed away suddenly in Ontario on Thursday, October
16, 1997 in his 49th year. Harry was Director of Operations for Central/Western
Canada for I.C.S. Courier, as well as a former member of the Alberta Rifle
Association in Calgary. Besides his loving wife, Harry is survived by
his daughter Dawn and her fiance Darren Strand; son Ryan; mother Norlaine
Eamon; sister Nancy and her husband Andrew; three brothers, Dave and his
wife Heather, Jim, and John and his fiancee Kristine; as well as several
loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Gordon (Duke)

EARL - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Thelma Irene
Earl (nee Hamilton), beloved wife of Mr. Arnold Earl of Calgary. She passed
away peacefully at the Rosedale Hospice on Monday, June 30, 1997 after
a lengthy battle with cancer, at the age of 63 years. Thelma was born
on December 18, 1933 in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. After completing her schooling
she worked in several cities and finally settled in Calgary where she
met Arnold. They were married on October 24, 1970. Together, they started
a family insurance business, working together for fourteen years, until
their recent retirement. Thelma was tremendously dedicated to her family
and work. She will be remembered for her bright smile, her generosity
and her incredible courage. Besides her loving husband, Thelma is survived
by two daughters, Christine of Calgary, and stepdaughter Lori of Vancouver,
BC. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, William (Ruth)
of Carnduff, and Murray (Shirley) of Regina; and three sisters and four
brothers-in-law, Willa (Norm) of Carnduff, Merle (Hugh) of Esterhazy,
Nell (Jack) of Regina, and Ed of Regina; as well as numerous aunts, uncles,
cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, John
and Mabel, and her sister Roberta. Those wishing to pay their respects

EATON - Lillian Yvonne Eaton of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the
Foothills Hospital on September 8, 1997 at the age of 72 years. Yvonne
is survived by her son Ron (Mary); her daughter Janice Eaton; her three
granddaughters, Heather, Lawrie and Alison; and by her brother Ron Hedstrom.

EBY - Edna Eby (Deadrick) was born in Artas, South Dakota, and passed
away in Calgary Foothills Hospital at the age of 89 years. She came to
Canada with her family in 1929 and settled in the Olds area. In 1934 she
married Eldon Deadrick. They farmed south of Olds and in 1954 they moved
to Olds, where she cooked for many years at the Olds Agricultural and
Vocational College. In 1966 they moved to Didsbury. She was predeceased
by her first husband Eldon Deadrick, and her second husband Lawrence Eby,
parents, William and Elizabeth Conway and brothers, Milton and Bill Conway.
She leaves to mourn her a son Bob Deadrick, Calgary; a daughter Margaret
(Garry) Nielson, Standard; three grandchildren, Kari (Andy) Moe, Kim (Truman)
Severson, Roger (Johanna Clark); and six great-grandchildren; three sisters,
Betty, Ida and Tillio; and one brother Ed (Lovella); and by many nieces
and nephews. She is also survived by a special family, Dave and Cheri
Foat, Marla, Kelsey and Jared, and the very special Eby family. A Memorial
Service will be held Tuesday, July 8, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. from Zion Evangelical

ECKERT - Mr. Paul Eckert beloved husband of Mrs. Adele Eckert of Calgary,

EDEY - Norman Roy Edey, a long time resident of Cayley and Nanton districts,
passed away June 29, 1997. Norman was born August 22, 1915 at Cayley,

daughter Donna and Ralph Leavens and their family Lana and Pat Leavens.

EDINGER - Rolf Edinger passed away peacefully in Calgary on October 30,
1997 at the age of 71 years. Rolf will be sadly missed by his wife Maya.
He was born in Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1954. Rolf had a passion

EDMUNDS - Harry passed away at his residence after a courageous battle
with cancer on June 17, 1997 at the age of 59 years, beloved husband of
Kathy and dear father of Matthew and Lisa. Harry is also survived by his
brothers and sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased
by his parents, George and Winnifred, and a sister. Harry was employed
at SAIT for thirty years. His second love was to work with Earl Galvin
at auctions. He was a past president and lifetime member of Crescent Park

EDWARDS - Aubrey M. Edwards passed away peacefully on Sunday, November
16, 1997 at the Rockyview General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Aubrey
is survived by his wife Margaret; son David; daughter-in-law Judy; grandsons,
Daniel and Cameron; brother Bob; sisters-in-law, Linda and Barbara; and
numerous nieces and nephews. Aubrey was born July 5, 1917 in Cowbridge,
Wales. After being educated at Cowbridge Grammar School, he articled to
Messrs. Tudor Williams & Company, Chartered Auctioneers, Estate Agents
and Surveyors of Cardiff, South Wales. In 1939, he was called into His
Majesty's Forces, where he served in India and Burma until discharged
in 1947 with the rank of Major, Welch Regiment. Aubrey emigrated to Canada
in 1947. He joined the Calgary Real Estate Board in 1948 and formed Aubrey
M. Edwards Ltd. in 1955. He was made a Fellow of the Chartered Institute
of Realtors in 1956. He was a Past President and Honorary Life Member
of the Calgary Real Estate Board, Past President of the Alberta Real Estate
Association, Regional Vice-President, Canadian Association of Real Estate
Boards, Member of the Governing Council, Canadian Institute of Realtors,
and served on the Court of Revision for twenty-five years. Aubrey loved
sports and played golf, field hockey, rugby, cricket, and even enjoyed
a brief stint in Canadian Football. Throughout his life, Aubrey always
put the needs of others ahead of his own and, despite numerous health
and physical problems in his latter years, he never complained or asked
for the sympathy of others. In true Welsh fashion, his cup was always
half full, never half empty. Aubrey was a tower of strength to many who
knew him, and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Visitation
will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19 at HERITAGE
FUNERAL HOME, 1708 - 16 Avenue N.W. (across from North Hill Shopping Centre).

EKENCRANTZ - Jordin Ekencrantz passed away peacefully at the Alberta
Children's Hospital on Friday, November 7, 1997 at the age of 5 years.
Jordin was surrounded by his family and friends during his final hours.
He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his mother Tracy Ekencrantz;
his family and many extended family members, "The girls" of
N cluster; and everyone with whom he has been in contact with in the last
five years at Alberta Children's Hospital. A special thank you to everyone
who gave their love and support for the past two months. Your love and
caring has not gone unnoticed. A Celebration of Jordin's Life will take

ELHORN - Helen Mary Elhorn passed away peacefully September 8, 1997 at
the Forest Grove Care Centre. Helen was born at Champion, Alberta in 1912.
Helen will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Gladys MacKenzie, Margaret
Moss and Phyllis Ingram; brothers, Alvin Elhorn, Harry (Jess) Elhorn and
Noval Elhorn; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and Harry Elhorn and brother

ELLIOT - Viola Elliot passed away at the Foothills Hospital on December
1, 1997 at the age of 79 years, beloved mother of Neil (Kerry), Ted (Karen)
of Calgary and Bill of Edmonton. She is also survived by four grandchildren;
her sister Rachel (Jim) Ray; niece Susan Cameron; and numerous other nieces
and nephews. Viola was predeceased by her husband Lee in 1982. No Services

ELLIOTT - Roxine Coral, passed away July 6, 1997 at the Rockyview Hospital,
at the age of 51 years. Married thirty years, she is survived by her husband

ELSAESSER - Eldon Manfred passed away at the Foothills Hospital on October
23, 1997 at the age of 35 years. Eldon is survived by his loving mother
Grace Elsaesser; his brother Derek and sister-in-law Nancy of Ottawa;
his brother Scott of Calgary; his maternal grandmother Anne Kerychuk of
Edmonton; his favorite Aunts, Pearl Tremblay of Chapleau, Ontario and
Shirley Wiwad of Edmonton; his Uncle Ray Wiwad; and his "adopted"
Aunt and Uncle, Phyllis and Cyril Britton of Canoe, BC. He is also survived
by his many friends who will miss him, especially at the Karaoke Bars.
Eldon was predeceased by his father Manfred in 1973. Eldon graduated from
James Fowler High School in 1981 and spent most of his working life as
a driver or salesman of a variety of vehicles. He loved cars and car racing.
He was also a lifelong Star Trek fan and had a substantial collection
of memorabilia, and hundreds of books and video tapes of all the television
series and movies. Following the Cremation, a Memorial Service will be
held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 27, 1997 at FOSTER'S FUNERAL HOMES
"Garden Chapel" at 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary. All of Eldon's

ELSON - William "Bill" Francis Elson passed away suddenly in
Port Hardy, British Columbia, July 1, 1997 at the age of 80 years. He
leaves his loving wife Mary Grace; four sons, five daughters, thirty grandchildren
and twenty great-grandchildren, as well as special family friends, Mary
and Duncan Lee and family. He was predeceased by his daughter Marie, July
1, 1941. Bill was a very special man who touched the lives of those who
knew and loved him. There will be a Visitation on Sunday, July 6, 1997

ENEVOLDSEN - Cecil Harold Enevoldsen, passed away peacefully at the Bethany
Care Centre on Tuesday, June 17, 1997 at the age of 84 years. Cecil is
survived by his loving family, daughter Carol Hamilton; grandchildren,
Carolyn (Bob), Michelle, Kevin (Ginette); five dear great-grandchildren,
Melissa, Monica, Suzanne, Mitchell and Megan. He is also survived by three
sisters, Elma Tyler, Muriel Davis and Helen (Clem) Billings; as well as
numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1987
and his brother Floyd in 1991. Born in Harmatten, Alberta, Cecil spent
his adult life in Calgary, serving with the Royal Canadian Airforce during
World War Two following which he was an owner operator with both United
Taxi and Yellow Cab, he then was in charge of ground transportation at
the Calgary International Airport until his retirement. Those wishing

ENGEL - Mr. Adolf Engel of Calgary went to be with his Lord on December
18, 1997 at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his loving wife of
sixty-seven years, Elfriede; his brother Jake of Calgary; and numerous
nieces and nephews living both in Canada and Germany. Adolf was born in
1908 in Klostitz, Besarabia, Russia. He and his loving wife Elfriede immigrated
to Canada in 1953, living for a year in Taber, and two years in Champion.
The couple moved to Calgary in 1957. Soon after they purchased their home
in Bridgeland and have resided there till Adolf's Heavenly call. Adolf
was predeceased by his mother Margaret in Besarabia, his father Jacob
in Stettler, AB, sisters, Matilda, Olga and Marie in Germany, and his
brothers, Alexander and John in Calgary. Funeral Services will be held
at Bridgeland Evangelical Missionary Church, 235 - 8A Street N.E. on Monday,
December 22, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Colin Meikle and Reverend

ENGEL - Fred W. Engel passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 14,
1997 at the Peter Lougheed Centre at the age of 88 years. Fred is survived
by his loving family, two sons, Richard (Faye) of Airdrie, Garth of Fairmont,
B.C. and daughter Kay (Bud) Hurl of Calgary; as well as six grandchildren
and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Gordon
of Victoria, B.C. Fred was predeceased by his wife Marguerite; grandson
Warren; and great-grandson Kieran. Fred was a long time employee of the
Calgary Herald until his retirement. Private Family services are being

ENGELMYER - James Henry, after a courageous battle with cancer, passed
away on December 2, 1997 at the Agape Manor surrounded by loved ones.
Jim will be forever missed by his wife and companion of twelve years,
Marina de la Porte; daughter Pat (Martin) Lee of Dubia, U.A.E.; stepdaughter
Carla (Jay) Masciangelo; brother Russ (Gail) Engelmyer of Comox, British
Columbia; as well as Ricky, Dwayne, Deanna and Michael, all residing in
British Columbia. Jim was born on March 28, 1932 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan
and was predeceased by his mother Kathleen Patricia Engelmyer and father
Julian Henry Engelmyer. Jim worked for the CN Railway for twenty-nine
years where he was District Superintendent. He was also a member of the
Calgary Motorcycle Club. A special thanks to Dr. Chad Anker, the staff
at the Agape Manor, Home Care, Calgary Home Support Services and all of
the RN's that stayed with Jim and his family to make Jim's journey as

ERICKSON - Gordon passed away at the Bow Crest Nursing Home on Wednesday,
July 9, 1997, at the age of 65 years. He is survived by his four children,

ERSKINE - James (Jim) Keenan Erskine passed away peacefully Friday, June
27, 1997 at the age of 71 years. Jim was highly regarded in the engineering
community since arriving from Belfast, North Ireland in 1954. Jim is survived
by his children, Redmond, Terry, Michael, Erin, their mother Ellen; his
sister Mavis Drake; his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He
will be fondly remembered by family and friends in Canada and abroad.

ESLER - November 23, 1900 - December 20, 1997 Gladys Esler (nee Spear)
passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 20, 1997. Gladys was born
in Ontario and moved west to Rosetown, Saskatchewan to marry Nat in March
of 1928. They homesteaded south of Biggar for most of their married lives.
She was very resourceful, taking up midwifery, a small retail store, a
matron for a nursing home and many real estate ventures. Her final years
were spent at the Brentwood Nursing Home with much thanks to Lee and staff
for making her life comfortable. Gladys is survived by her daughter Pearl
(Harold) Hagen; son Lloyd (Sally) Esler; four grandchildren, and many
great-grandchildren. Her husband Nat and grandchild Lionel predeceased
her. Gladys' family will miss her dearly, but her memory will live long
in our hearts. A Private Family Service will be held to mourn her passing.

EUSTAQUIO - Esperanza "Espie" Fajardo Eustaquio, passed away
at the Foothills Hospital on Tuesday, July 15, 1997 at the age of 75 years.
Espie was born on August 25, 1921 at Bustos, Bulacan, Philippines and
has resided in Calgary since 1980. She is survived by her daughter Estrellita
of the Philippines; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dante and Nelida
of Philippines, Danny and Dhee, and Dennis and Nitz, all of Calgary; and
sixteen grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Arturo (Tuding)
and Danding (Mely); three sisters, Celing San Juan, Lita (Lino) Tan, and
Mila (Ben) Tolentino; and several other relatives and many friends. Espie
was predeceased by her husband Demetrio in 1978, her sisters, Asuncion
and Fely, and her granddaughter Jean Danielle. Those wishing to pay their

EVANS - Edna, passed away in Calgary on Tuesday, September 9, 1997, at
the age of 87 years. Born in Blairmore, Alberta on December 28, 1909,
she grew up in the Crowsnest Pass. She attended Normal School in Calgary
in 1926 and began her teaching career at the Olin Creek School, north
of Cowley in 1927. She continued to live and teach in the Crowsnest Pass
until moving to Calgary in 1959, where she taught mathematics and science
in several schools until her retirement in 1969. Throughout her life,
she pursued her interest in horse racing at Stampede Park. Another love,
was travel with her close friends, with frequent visits to Las Vegas and
Reno, and occasional trips to far away places including the Orient, England
and Hawaii. She will be remembered as one who loved to socialize and would
never turn down a good game of "Stop the Bus". She is survived
by her husband Idris; son Donald, daughter-in-law Judy, and grandchildren,

EVANS - Gerald Roy (Gerry) Evans, beloved husband, father and friend,
passed away at homeon Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at the age of 72 years.
He was predeceased by his parents,Laura and Leonard Evans, first wife
Betty Beaumont, second wife Dona Belle Evans (neeDwigans) in 1971, and
son Rexford John Evans in 1968. Gerry is survived by his wife ClaireEvans;
brother Walter Evans (Vivian) of Victoria, BC; daughters, Sharon Evans
of Toronto,Peggy Henderson of Etobicoke, ON, Gillian Evans (Paul Fry)
of Calgary, and Heather Johnson(Derrick) of Port Moody, BC; stepdaughters,
Kerry White-Tucker (Ron Tucker) of Calgary, andJennifer White of Vancouver;
stepson Greg White (Karen Mackie) of Calgary; grandchildren,Blair and
Jason Henderson of Etobicoke, ON, Jessica and Hannah Johnson of Port Moody,
BC;and stepgrandchildren, Rebecca and Samuel Tucker of Calgary. Born in
Saskatoon in 1925,Gerry completed Senior Matriculation at Bedford Road
Collegiate in June, 1943. Heimmediately joined the Royal Canadian Navy,
where he served until 1945. He became ajourneyman electrician in 1947,
running his own electrical and outboard marine business until1952 when
he went to Juno, Alaska to work in the C.M.S. Mine. Gerry returned to
Saskatoon toform an electrical contracting firm which was responsible
for the electrical portion of all themajor gas installations in the city
of Saskatoon. In 1958, Gerry received his registered huntingand fishing
guide's license, which began his life-long love affair with the North
Country,particularly LaRonge, Saskatchewan. Gerry moved to Calgary in
1959, where he became arepresentative for the Electrical Services League
of Alberta, while working as a journeymanelectrician. He later worked
for Federal Pacific Electric Equipment Manufacturers, until 1966,when
he transferred to Pyle National Electrical Manufacturing, where he remained
whilecompleting the Academic Business Diploma Program at Mount Royal College,
where he wasawarded the Birks Medal for highest grade point average for
1968-1969. In order to raise twoyoung daughters and care for his terminally
ill wife, Dona, Gerry entered and completed in 1973,a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Education. He taught at James Short Memorial Elementary Schooluntil
1976, when he began teaching in the Math and Physics Department at S.A.I.T.
for the nextten years. Gerry completed his Master of Arts in Applied Behavioral
Science from L.I.O.S. in1986, and given his keen interest in step families,
was instrumental in starting S.O.S. (Society ofStep-families). In 1997
he earned his Doctoral Degree in Philosophy and Health and HumanSciences
from Columbia Pacific University, San Francisco, CA. Gerry died as he
had lived,surrounded by the love, admiration and respect of his family
and friends. He will be cremated,and in the spring, Gerry's ashes will
be returned to the North Country, which he loved so deeply.A Memorial

EVANS - Irene Evans passed away at the Oilfields General Auxiliary Hospital
on June 6, 1997, at the age of 89 years. Irene is survived by two sons,
David (Donna) and Milton (Shirley) and by her daughter Alice Melvin. She
is the loving grandmother of Donald (Pat), Daryl (Bev), Cam (Lindy), Stuart
Evans, Kelly (Kevin) Kerr, Michelle and Jim Melvin; and a great-grandmother
to nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Bob Rickett
of Calgary. She was predeceased by her husband Elwyn in 1984 and her sister
Myrtle in 1993. Irene derived a great deal of personal satisfaction from
being a school teacher and conversing with her former pupils. She will

EVEREST - Olive Everest (nee Lefenko) passed away peacefully at the Peter
Lougheed Centre on September 30, 1997 in her 79th year. Beloved wife of
the late Charles Everest; and dear mother of Ron and his wife Irene, Gordon
and his wife Marty; and daughter Charlene. She is survived by her grandchildren,
Tom and Terri-Jo, James, Rob, Mary, Sarah, and Peter. Charlie and Olive
enjoyed many years of travel, photography, mountain climbing, hiking and

EWEN - Mr. Hume Ivan Ewen, beloved husband and best friend of Shirley,
passed away peacefully on September 4, 1997 at the age of 74 years, after
a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and cancer. He
will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by Shirley; his brother Cliff
of Victoria; sister Iris Sutton of Vancouver; sister and brother-in-law,
Joanne and Don Jepson of Calgary, and their families, Jim and Ingrid Jepson
