1997: Deaths - Le
LEAVITT - Nedra (nee Woolf), beloved wife of Dean H. Leavitt, passed
away peacefully after a brief illness at the Rockyview Hospital on December
9, 1997. She was 81 years old. Besides her loving husband Dean, she is
survived by two daughters, Deanne Lund of Anaheim, California and Shirley
(Cornelius) Kloosterman of Calgary; two sons, Bradford (Joyce) of Edmonton,
and Gregory (Martine) of High River. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren,
one great-grandchild; brothers, Lee Woolf and William Woolf of Lethbridge;
and a sister Helen Westfall of Calgary. Nedra was born on October 12,
1916 in Cardston, Alberta. All her life she was an active member of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions
of responsibility, teaching in the Sunday School and other auxiliaries,
president of the Ward Primary organization, and member of the Stake Relief
Society Board in Calgary. Until her illness, she was an avid reader and
was well-read both in the scriptures and in works of good literature.
Most importantly, she was a sensitive and devoted mother who supported
her children and grandchildren in all their activities. Those wishing
to pay their respects may do so at Pierson's Funeral Home, 4121 - 17 Avenue
S.E., on Friday, December 12 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will
be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sundance Chapel,

LEE - Mrs. Eileen Doris Lee was born March 13, 1924 in Regina, Saskatchewan
to Albert and Margaret Lawton. She led a simple and happy life until she
passed away while in repose December 9, 1997 at the Central Park Lodge.
Her life was filled with caring for her family and was noted as a loving
mother with a zest for life. She worked at the Calgary General Hospital
in housekeeping for twenty years until retiring in 1991. It was only after
her retirement that she was diagnosed to have Alzheimer's disease. This
did not deter her from enjoying friends and family. She was kind, jovial
and caring. A person whose testament to faith and courage that will be
missed, but not forgotten. Eileen is survived by her only son George Albert

LEE - Mrs. Ngok Nui Lee passed away peacefully at the Beverly Centre
on Tuesday, October 14, 1997 at the age of 104 years. She was the beloved
mother of Chun Tao (son-in-law Chu Lam Ng), New York; Terry (daughter-in-law
Gam Yee), and Laurie (daughter-in-law Lydia) of Calgary. She is also survived
by fourteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lee
was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1971, her daughter in 1984, her
sister and her two brothers in China. Mrs. Lee was born in Toy Sun, Kwangtung,
China and came to Canada in 1964 and resided in Calgary with her loving
family. She was a member of the Lee Association. The family wish to express
their appreciation and thanks to Dr. S. Grunberg and the Beverly Centre
Nursing and Kitchen staff for their kind care and attention to Mrs. Lee

LEE - Yuk Jan, passed away November 6, 1997 at the age of 71 years. He
is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law and two daughters and

LEEMANS - Antoon C.B., peacefully on November 25, 1997 at Antwerp, Belgium
at the ageof 89 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Corry;

LEHMAN - Mr. John William (Jack) Lehman, passed away at the Mayfair Care
Centre on July 10, 1997, at the age of 81 years. Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
on May 23, 1916, Jack grew up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. He attained his
Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1936,
and relocated to Calgary in 1939 to begin a long and successful career
in the oil and gas business. One of Jack's passions in life was golf.
He and his wife Etta were both avid golfers and were members of the Calgary
Golf and Country Club for many years. They were also actively involved
in the Gyro Club for nearly fifty years. Jack was above all, a loving
and devoted husband and father. He was a kind and gentle man and those
who knew him well will agree that they never heard him say anything negative
about anyone. He will be very much missed by his family and many friends.
Jack is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Latrice Lehman
of Calgary; and his daughter and son-in-law, Val and Jack Hagerman of
Bluesky, Alberta; as well as five grandchildren, Darcy and Annette Hagerman
of Edmonton, Todd and Chantelle Hagerman of Grande Cache, Tammy Douglas
of Edmonton, Jeffrey and Cameron Lehman of Calgary; and six great-grandchildren,
Alexis, Nicole and Candace Hagerman of Edmonton, Laura and Johnathan Hagerman
of Grande Cache, and Michaela Douglas of Edmonton. Jack is also survived
by his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Alice Lehman of Regina; sister-in-law
and brother-in-law, Merle and Bill Dertell of Winnipeg; sister-in-law
Dorothy Parkinson of Saskatoon; and many nieces and nephews and their
families. He was predeceased by Etta, his loving wife of fifty-three and

LENNON - Mrs. Evelyn Lindsay Lennon, passed away at Foothills Hospital
on June 17, 1997 at the age of 77 years. Evelyn was a loving wife, mother,
and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family. She is lovingly
remembered by her children, Robert and Elaine Lewis, Sandra Cornet and
Leo; two grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew Cornet. She also leaves to
mourn her passing her sister and best friend, Constance Kent; sisters-in-law,
Anne Bannister, Maude Stafford, and Joan Parker; as well a many nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Lewis in 1995.

LEONG - Fon Kue (nee Gunn), passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care
Centre on July 21, 1997 at the age of 100 years. She was predeceased by
her husband Dick Leong in 1984, and two daughters. She is survived by
two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry and Lai Ha Leong, Frank and May Leong;
and a daughter and son-in-law, May and Teddy Mah, all of Calgary; thirteen
grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed
by her family and friends. Fon Kue was born in Guangdong, China. She came
to Canada in 1957 with her son Frank to join her husband who was operating
a grocery store in South Calgary. She assisted in operating their business
until their retirement. A loving mother and grandmother, she devoted a
good portion of her life in raising two sons and three daughters. She

LePAGE - Jordi Allan LePage, born Saturday, November 8, 1997 passed away
peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 1997. For the short time Jordi was with

LERCH - (nee Hibbard). Melanie Lisa, beloved wife of Alex Matthew Lerch
of Calgary, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour
on Saturday, November 15, 1997 after a courageous battle with Hodgkin's
disease. She is much loved and cherished and will be sadly missed by her
mother and father, Marilyn and Allan Hibbard; and brothers, Bruce and
Chris Hibbard; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Judy and Fritz Lerch;
and sister-in-law Sherry Lerch. Melanie's caring disposition and cheerful
smile will long be remembered by those who knew her. The families would

LERNER - Terry, born May 1, 1939 at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away
suddenly on December 8, 1997, after heart surgery at the Royal Jubilee
Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia. Loving and devoted father of Simon,
Claire, and Ruth. Terry was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Betty
Lerner, and his brother Harvey. He is survived by a sister, Lois Brackelmanns

LESTAGE - Dylan Lestage of Calgary passed away at the Foothills Hospital
on July 17, 1997 at the age of 15 years, five days short of his sixteenth
birthday on July 22. Dylan is lovingly remembered by his mother Carol
Fraser; stepfather Tracy Bennett; paternal father Dave Lestage; sister
Nicole; stepsister Mandy; maternal grandmother Lorretta Coveyduck of Montreal;
paternal grandparents, Cecily and Bill Lestage of New Brunswick; and by
many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Dylan was predeceased by
his grandfather Ronald Fraser and by his grandmother Malena Bennett. Dylan

LEUSCHNER - Lela Stell Leuschner (nee Baker) passed away peacefully December
22, 1997 at the Extendicare Cedars Villa at the age of 93 years. "Judy"
as she was known to many, will be sadly missed by her son William Charles
Leuschner and his wife Laurie of Calgary; her grandchildren, Jan Swinson
(Richard) of Bedford, Texas, Lizabeth Leuschner (Steve Wilson) of Calgary,
and Charles Leuschner of Vancouver, B.C.; and her great-grandchildren,
Chris and Callie Ruth Meeks (Texas), and Layton, Rachel and True Wilson
(Calgary); as well as many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased
by her husband William Charles Leuschner Jr. in 1966, and by her sister
Edna Vada Baker in 1984. During World War II, Judy packed parachutes for
the U.S. Air Corps. She was active in Violet Chapter No. 158, Order of
the Eastern Star in Victoria, Texas where her membership spanned more
than fifty years. After having lived for many years in Corpus Christi,
Texas where she enjoyed her garden and fruit trees, she moved to Calgary
in 1988 to be near her family. Special thanks to the many fine people

LEWANDOWSKI - Tillie (Mathilde) Lewandowski passed away peacefully at
the Rockyview Hospital on November 16, 1997 following a courageous battle
with cancer. Mother to John Lewandowski and Eva Mundy; son-in-law Keith
Mundy; grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren, John Jr., Jewell,
Michael and Jennifer. She was born in Bremen, Germany and is also survived
by her mother Wanda Witte and cousin Klaus Schwan, both residing there.

LEWIS - Vivian Ardith aged 32 years of Claresholm, Alberta passed away
November 15, 1997, following her deteriorating health, beloved daughter
of Stanley Lewis and the late Leona Lewis of Claresholm; and dear sister

AB, Jeanine Lewis of Drayton Valley, AB; and loving aunt of Stephanie

LIBIN - Bernard Lawrn Libin, beloved husband and best friend of Phyllis
of thirteen years, passed away peacefully on July 5, 1997, after a courageous
fight with cancer at the age of 63 years. Bernard was born August 24,
1933, in Calgary, Alberta. He began his career in the men's clothing business
with "Reliable Clothing Company" and later, in partnership with
his brother Gilbert, opened the "College Shop" in 1955. After
enjoying success on the Eighth Avenue Mall, they moved the shop to "Penny
Lane" and changed the name to "David Austin Clothiers",
where they remained until closing the shop in 1981. Besides his loving
wife, Bernard is survived by his mother Rose; a son Steven; a daughter
Miriam; a step-daughter Leah; a brother Gilbert and his wife Mary; a brother-in-law
Richard and his wife Betty Anne Williams; a nephew Sean and his wife Christie;
all of Calgary. Bernard was predeceased by his father Sam in 1986. His
dignity, intelligence, compassion, grace, sense of humour and kindness
to anyone he met will be missed by all of us who knew him and loved him.

LIDDELL - Thomas McRoberts (Tom) Liddell, beloved husband of Doreen Liddell
of Calgary, passed away suddenly at the Rockyview Hospital on November
18, 1997 at the age of 70 years. Tom was born June 10, 1927 in Cambuslang,
Scotland; he later met and married his beloved Doreen on April 1, 1950.
In 1959 they emigrated to Canada settling in Calgary. Following a long
career in the foundry business, Tom retired in June of 1992. Besides his
loving wife, Tom is survived by one son Iain Liddell of Calgary; one daughter
Anne and her husband Steve King, and one grandson Tommy, all of Botha,
Alberta. He is also survived by one brother Alex and his wife Bett, and
one sister Helen and her husband Allistair Smith, and four nieces, all

LIEFF - Bernie (Bernard Charles) died peacefully after a courageous battle
with the cancer Multiple Myeloma on October 25, 1997 in Victoria, B.C.
at the age of 55 years. Bernie is survived by his wife of thirty years,
Joy in Victoria, and his daughter Dayna in Claresholm, Alberta. Also left
to mourn are Bernie's parents, Vera and Abe Lieff; sister and brother-in-law,
Diane and Dick Payne; niece Julie and nephew Robin of Victoria; Bernie's
in-laws, Sheila and Murray Garnett of Victoria; and family members, Maureen,
Reg, Robin and Gennie Dunkley, Joan and Bob Shakeshaft, Tim and Jenny
Smart are also saddened by his passing. Bernie will be remembered by his
friends and colleagues at Parks Canada where he worked for twenty-six
years and strived to impart his strong conservation ethic. Bernie's family

LIND - Mr. Ernest W. (Ernie) Lind, dearly beloved husband of Mrs. Mae
Lind of Calgary, passed away suddenly at the Foothills Hospital on October
26, 1997 at the age of 88 years. Ernie was a lifetime member of the Calgary
South West Lions Club, Vulcan Lions Club and Yuma, Arizona Lions Club.
He worked in the construction industry in Calgary, Vulcan and surrounding
area building many homes and commercial buildings, and also farmed in
the Vulcan area. Besides his loving wife, Ernie is survived by his family,
daughter Luella; two granddaughters and their husbands, Tammy and Greg
Bratton and Cheryl and Craig Heschuk; and four great-grandchildren, Amanda
and Luke Bratton and Alexander and Sydney Heschuk. He is also survived
by his sister-in-law Clista Heather of Vancouver, BC; sister-in-law and
brother-in-law Ila and Reinhold Lundgren; as well as cousins, Maggie and
Ken Johnson and Paul Magnesdun of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan and their families;

LITTLE - Lorne M. Little of Calgary, formerly of Dartmouth, NS, passed
away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his residence on Friday,
September 12, 1997 at the age of 73 years. Lorne was born in Calgary on
Sunday, August 3, 1924 and raised in Grainger, AB. He was based in Halifax,
NS serving in the Royal Canadian Navy for twenty-five years, then relocated
to Calgary in 1969 where he has since resided. Lorne is survived by his
loving family, Jim Little and his wife Alexis of Dartmouth, NS, Carol
and her husband Kal Krishnan of Pittsburg, CA, Elaine Little of Edmonton,
Colleen and her husband Dale Reid of Edmonton, Debby and her husband Brian

LITTLE - Mrs. Marie Little (nee Starkell), and formerly Mrs. Lawrence,
passed away at the Foothills Hospital on November 23, 1997, at the age
of 79 years. Marie was born April 20, 1918, in Arcola, Saskatchewan, but
lived for many years in Medicine Hat. She was a graduate of the Nursing
Assistant Program at the Calgary General Hospital in 1962. Marie worked
for many years at the Calgary General Hospital, Medicine Hat Hospital,
Strathmore's Wheatland Lodge and the Claresholm Hospital in her chosen
profession. She was a long-standing member of the I.O.D.E. and volunteered
many hours at their second-hand store. Marie is the loving mother of a
daughter and son-in-law, Elinor and Fred DeMaris of Calgary; two sons
and a daughter-in-law, John Raymond and Brenda Lawrence of Edmonton, and
Robert Keith Lawrence of Vancouver; sixteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two sisters, Lillian Nolan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
and Lena Matwick of Brandon, Manitoba. Marie was predeceased by her first
husband John Raymond Lawrence in 1961 and her second husband John A. Little

LOEWEN - Henry Peter Loewen, beloved husband of Gwen Loewen, of Calgary,

LOHRER - Louise Vivian Lohrer, of Calgary, passed away September 7, 1997
at the age of 72 years. She will be forever remembered by her dear friend
George Zanin; her daughter Verna Eklund (Danny) of Calgary; her three
sons, Norman MacDonald (Denise), of Abbottsford, BC, Mr. Stacey Lohrer
of Calgary, and Collin Lohrer (Kathy) of Medicine Hat; eight grandchildren,
Tammy-Lee (Wesley), Travis (Heidi), Adrian, Jeffery, Hillery, Zachary,
Terra and Jeremy; Carly; one sister Doreen Peters (Les); one brother Mervin

LONG - Walter Bradbury, on September 9, 1997. Born February 11, 1917
in Chelsea North London, England. Immigrated with his family to Canada
as a young man and settled in the Dunster area of British Columbia. Walter
married Jean Kathleen Clark at Tete Jaune Cache, B.C. in 1941. Walter
served in the Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945 retiring as a Flight
Lieutenant. Walter settled briefly in Edmonton after the war before moving
to Calgary where he enjoyed a long and successful career in the roofing
industry. Walter retired to the Windermere area in 1985 where he was active
in the Lions Club as well as enjoying golf and travel. Walter was predeceased
by Jean in May of this year. He will be lovingly remembered by sons, Gary
(Vickie), Gordon (Liz); grandsons, Kelsey, Bradley, Tyson and granddaughter
Jaime; as well as his many friends and relatives. The Long family is grateful
for the kind care and attention of the staff of the Invermere Hospital.

LONGLEY - Frank Gilbert, passed away peacefully in the presence of his
family at the Rockyview Hospital on September 2, 1997. He was predeceased
by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Barbara in 1992, as well as his
daughter Arlene Frances (1972), son Frank Gilbert Jr. (1996), and grandson
Leonard (1994). Frank was born in Winnipeg, MB on January 12, 1910. He
married Barbara on March 1, 1930. Frank worked for the Manitoba Telephone
System for thirty-four years, spending 1950 to 1958 in Virden, MB. He
also served with the RCMP during World War II. Upon retirement in 1960,
he moved to Victoria, BC where he pursued his love of fly tying and fishing.
He was a member of the Golden Rods Club. In 1986 Frank moved to Burnaby
with his wife and in 1993 after her passing, he settled in Calgary. He
will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his son Dennis; his grandchildren,
Merna (Derek), Barb (Peter), Suzanne, Ken (Laurie), Caroline (Nick), Kevin
(Jackie), Angella, Debbie (Al), Michelle (Dennis), Richard; his great-grandchildren,
Andrea, Lisa, Scott, Jill, Kevin, Brittney, Christopher, Stephanie, Kendra,
Breanne, Taryn; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside Service will take

LOOSE - Mrs. Anna Loose, beloved wife of the late Peter Loose, went to
be with the Lord on December 4, 1997 at the Bow View Manor at the age

LORENSON - On September 16, 1915 God sent an angel from heaven to inspire
and enrich all of our lives. On Earth we called this angel Mary Fraser
Lorenson and we treasured her with all of our hearts. On October 31, 1997,

LOUIE - Jong Yee Louie, beloved wife of Mr. Harry Louie of Calgary, passed
away at the Bethany Care Centre on November 29, 1997 at the age of 87
years. Jong Yee Louie was born in Toishan, China on September 29, 1911.
She immigrated to Calgary, Canada in 1954 and reunited with her husband
where they ran a family grocery business for many years. She will be remembered
as a strong and caring woman who always put the needs of her family before

LOW - William Gould, at Mississauga Hospital, on Saturday, December 13,
1997 in his 69th year. Beloved husband of the late Lois. Dear step-father
of Ruth Meinecke and her husband Guy Gibbons of Montreal, Karen and her

Andrew and Jessica. Also loved by brother Richard and his wife Dorothy
of London, Ontario; their four children; and brother-in-law and close
friend Chris Doscher and his wife Sonya. Bill was a Chartered Accountant
with Hyde Houghton in Montreal. He moved to Toronto in 1979 to strengthen
and establish their Toronto office. He became the firm's managing partner,
retiring in 1991 to do consulting. He loved golf and was an active member
of Mississauga, Royal Montreal, and Dataw. He was proud of his Scottish
roots and was a life member of the St. Andrew's Society. Memorial Visitation
