Victorian Mourning Customs
It has been said that there are only two things we can be certain of in life — death and taxes. While many tried to avoid or fight taxes, our 19th century ancestors embraced death. They often welcomed it, and followed some intricate rituals to publicly mourn their loved ones. This presentation will look at those rituals and customs—where they came from and how they evolved, the meaning and purpose of them, and what they meant to our ancestors. These customs are at times poignant, sad, silly, macabre, and just plain strange to modern eyes. The presentation will include where to look for clues about deaths in our own family trees, research paths to follow, and how to interpret the impact of deaths on our ancestors.
