KDGS Family History Forum – June 25

We have been asked to share the following information about Kelowna and District Genealogy Society’s upcoming meeting.

Join us for our June 25th Family History Forum:

The Last Best West: Land Records of the Prairie Provinces, presented by KDGS member Mary Read

They came for the land. And for the life and future it promised. Wherever they came from and whether they came to homestead or to ride the wave of prosperity brought by the growing population, the availability of farm land was the key to the settlement of the prairies. Learn the story of the land, the steps in the process of homesteading and how to find the land records that document your family’s prairie story in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

When: Tuesday, June 25, 6:30 – 8:00pm, via Zoom

About Mary Read…

When Mary Read inherited her mom’s family research files in 1996, she didn’t realize that genealogy would become a major part of her life.  She joined the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society that same year and since then has taken a role in the society. She is currently on the library committee, is on the board and is the editor of the KDGS quarterly newsletter, The Okanagan Researcher.  Mary grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan and her roots are still firmly planted in the prairies where her grandparents and great grandparents homesteaded. She enjoys doing look-ups in her large collection of prairie histories and helping researchers around the world find their prairie story.

Family History Forums are a partnership presentation series of the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society and the Okanagan Regional Library. The topics vary but are typically at the beginner’s level in Family History research. All are welcome to these FREE Zoom presentations, but pre-registration is required through the ORL’s Events Calendar, https://orl.evanced.info/signup/Calendar, scroll down to June 25, 6:30pm and find, “Online Family History Forum.” Click on the event in the Calendar and follow the instructions. Be sure to enter your email address correctly and watch for the email from the ORL to confirm your registration and the Zoom link. There will be no Family History Forums in July or August but watch for notices of our September 24th FHF!
