A group of dedicated volunteers staff our resource centre for open times each week. View the calendar for details about upcoming open times. If you are visiting from outside of Calgary and are unable to visit during open library times, please contact us at to arrange access.

Our Library offers about 11,000 items related to genealogical research. The collection is broad but does have an emphasis on materials pertaining to Alberta, the United Kingdom, Ontario, and the rest of Canada.

Come search for your family in the following available resources:

  • Ancestry Library Edition on our computers
  • Journals and newsletters
  • Family histories
  • General reference books
  • Local history books
  • Maps and atlases
  • Microfiche and microfiche reader

Everyone can research at our facility. In order to sign out non-reference materials, you must be an AFHS member. Materials can be signed out for a one-month loan period.

We also have the collections of three other organizations in our library:

·       Calgary Heritage National Society Daughters of the American Revolution

·       Historical Society of Alberta

·       Calgary Branch United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada

We are very thankful for donations of family history materials as they are the backbone of our collection.

Looking for our catalogue? Click here for a PDF version of our catalogue. It can be searched by using Control F and entering a search term. Please remember that this is an exact search. Entering one or two keywords works best.

Don’t forget to check the basement for our sale items. We sell duplicate items and older materials to raise money for new materials.

An overhead scanner and a scanner that can scan slides and negatives are also available at the library for member use. Contact to set up an appointment.

AFHS members can book our resource centre for meetings and events. Please contact to make these arrangements.
