Kraków Fire Destroys Archives
The archives of the Kraków City Hall are at risk in a massive fire that has been raging on for days. More than 50 firefighters have been tackling a ‘difficult’ blaze, hampered by cold weather, narrow corridors, blinding smoke and of course the high amount of ‘fuel’ in an archive environment. City employees are attempting to remove as many surviving archives as they can, from 20,000 meters of city documents on high and low shelving. Most of the documents destroyed in the Kraków Fire have not been digitized and stored online. This is one of the great fears of archivists and genealogists. See news item at here.
