English/Welsh Special Interest Group
April 20 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm MDT
The English/Welsh Special Interest Group is for those researching in England or Wales. If you are doing genealogy research in either of these areas, come join us! Our members have a wealth of information to share.
The English/Welsh Special Interest Group meets on the third Saturday of each month (except July and August) at 10 am.
This meeting will be held either via Zoom or hybrid from the AFHS Library at 712 16 Avenue NW in Calgary (weather dependent). Bev will let the members know which a few days prior to the meeting.
Topic for this meeting: Truncated – An Abbreviated Family Tree presented by Ron Gilmore. This is a saga of his maternal grandmother’s life journey, beginning as one of the so-called “British Home Children.” She was abandoned near Glasgow, Scotland at 6 months and scooped up by an organization shipping “waifs and strays” to Canada and Australia as labourers and indentured servants. This hidden family story holds images of societal shame, endless numbers of pregnancies, grinding poverty and an early death. This is not a “how-to” and not intended for anyone who might be squeamish or sensitive. The story, thankfully, contains a series of genealogical research successes.
Our special interest groups are a member benefit, but we welcome visitors! If the meeting is being held at the library and you live in Calgary and area, please just come to the library and introduce yourself. If you would like to attend a Zoom session as a guest, please email email@example.com to receive the Zoom invitation.
For other Special Interest Group meetings and AFHS events, see our calendar.
