Research

Our members research all over the world! The name of our organization suggests we might be only for those searching for Albertan roots, but this is not the case. Many of our members have expertise in geographical areas beyond our province’s borders. We do our best to connect members with others who might assist them. Our events and resources support broad genealogy research. The information on this section of our website, however, has a regional focus.
If you are looking for research assistance for Calgary and area, we have a team of members who will do lookups for a reasonable fee. These funds support our Society and its work. Check our Research Assistance page for details on this AFHS initiative.
In support of your own research and activities, we have compiled a list of websites to help you discover the best places to look, including links to libraries and archives which might have records not available online. See the Links and Suggestions page.
Volunteers from our Society have photographed many headstones, indexed newspaper notices, gleaned information about returning World War 1 soldiers, and compiled some birth, marriage and death announcements from early Calgary newspapers.
To showcase the cemetery information and headstone photographs, we created a new website. Called Alberta Ancestors, it can be accessed on our Cemeteries page.
Our newest project involves indexing the newspaper notices in early Calgary newspapers. Links to these databases can be found on the dropdown for the Research menu. It is a work in progress.
